how many watts should my aquarium heater have?

i have a 10 gallon fish tank and i was just given 3 used heaters from a pet store and i was wondering how many watts?(i already cleaned them thourohly(bad spelling))

The best guideline is 5 watts per gallon of water. So if you have a 10 gallon tank, your heater should be 50 watts. More is fine, just make sure it won’t overheat your tank too quickly.

Of course, this only applies to homes that are room temperature. If they’re unusually cold, then you’d need 75+ watts.

You generally want to leave the heater on 24/7 in the Winter when it gets really cold, and leave it off 24/7 in the Summer when the tank will get heated naturally. E-mail me for any questions!
