Could someone explain how under gravel filters work?

I am very new to fish keeping, and I can not figure out exactly how it is that under gravel filters function.

Could someone explain all the parts, and each of their separate functions?

It’s quite simple really – an air pump blows air through a stone at the bottom those of those tubes that run from the plates to the top of the tank. The air, while rising, pulls water with it, so it creates a current running down through the filter plates and up through those tubes. The water pulls through the gravel, along with ammonia, nitrite, and oxygen, to flow through the gravel and as such, turns the gravel into a very effective bed of biological media.

Unfortunately, all the waste is sucked down too, and vacuuming gets more difficult, and much of this waste gets under the filter plates and builds up into an awful sludge that is near impossible to clean unless you tear apart the whole tank. For this reason, power filters are the better alternative – while undergravel filters are exceptional biological filters, they actually cause a dirtier tank over time, which is why many people are against using them.
