If you’ve owned a guinea pig for some time, you probably know by now that there are two major types of hay you can feed your pig, namely timothy and alfalfa. Alfalfa hay is richer among the two in a number of nutrients, namely calcium. Required for building strong bones, the calcium in this type of hay can be really beneficial to baby guinea pigs as they grow up.

However, by the time they’re adults, cavies need to be fed substantially lower amounts of calcium or else they risk developing kidney stones. Also, alfalfa hay could easily fatten your cavies because it is laden with calories, and household guinea pigs are relatively inactive compared to those in the wild.

This is where timothy hay comes in. In case you didn’t know, timothy hay isn’t a brand; it’s actually a variety of hay and is the most commonly used for grazing. It is a much gentler hay with well-balanced nutrition that is perfect for keeping your pigs in shape. Also, you will find that your cavies love timothy hay over just about everything else you can feed them.

Timothy hay isn’t just important for its nutritional balance. When guinea pigs eat hay, they really work their teeth. This is essential in preventing dental problems like molar overgrowth which is one of the most common conditions in cavies. Timothy hay provides the best solution to this over anything else (fruits, vegetables, manufactured food etc).

So how much hay should you feed your guinea pig? Simply put, there’s no limit. At all times, your pig should have access to an abundance of it. When I say abundance, I’m not just talking about refilling the hay rack when it’s empty; I actually mean putting hay all over the cage area.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve got fleece bedding; you can still have hay lying there because cavies naturally love it. Of course, you’ll have to waste plenty by replacing all of the hay once every few days but it’s the only real way to keep your pig in a happy and natural setting.

Timothy hay can be bought from your local pet store in pre-packaged amounts. But if you have the option of buying it fresh from a farm, then by all means do so. But be careful that you don’t purchase what is called “first-cut” hay for feeding purposes. It’s okay for laying around the cage but is too harsh for your pigs to eat and can cause problems. So go for second or third-cut hay when buying from a farm.
