Tank Siphon

If you own a fish tank or are planning on getting one, you should keep in mind that you need to clean the tank every month. Regular cleaning makes the tank look better and more importantly, keeps the fish healthy.

Before you start cleaning your tank, make sure you disconnect all the electrical equipments. Start by removing the light ballast and then carefully lift up the hood and set it aside. It is best to keep the hood in a tub so you can clean it easily. Using a piece of cloth, just wipe the insides of the hood. The algae come off quite comfortably. If you find it hard to remove, just use a wet cloth or an algae pad.

Next, let’s move on to the tank. Using a siphon hose, drain out a few inches of water into a bucket. This will prevent the tank from overflowing when you put your hand in to scrub. Rinse out a piece of cloth so that you get rid of all traces of detergent. Now use this cloth to scrub all the inner surfaces of the tank. Leave one of the panes of the tank unscrubbed so that the plecostomus still have some algae to feed on.

Once the tank has been scrubbed, remove all the artificial plants and decorations and place them in a second bucket. Make sure you shake out the plants well before keeping them in the bucket so any fish hiding in there don’t get trapped. Now rinse out the plants and decorations in the kitchen sink. Use an algae pad to scrub the plants and the decorations gently.

If your tank has a top-hanging filter, detach it from the back and carry it to the sink. Drain out the water and disconnect the water intake pipe, its housing and the impeller. Rinse all three items and set aside. If your tank has a bio-wheel just set it aside. Don’t rinse out the bio-wheel. Discard the old cartridge from the filter unit and then rinse out the filter. Keep rinsing it till water flows through it comfortably.

Next, drain out about 30% of the water from the tank using the siphon hose. While doing this, push one end of the hose into the gravel so that all the dirt settled in towards the bottom gets sucked out. Once you’ve finished draining out the water, fill up the tank with water that is at room temperature. Replace the plants and decorations and your fish tank is ready to be used.
