The worst thing that can happen to a saltwater aquarium is that it becomes over gown with algae. This not only takes away from the look of the tank but also signals something is unbalanced in the setup. Below you will find some useful tips on how to stop algae in a saltwater tank.

Easy Ways To Stop Algae In a Saltwater Tank

Because uneaten fish food decays and as a by product of decay produces algae feeding compounds you should reduce the amount of food you feed your fish and feed them with all the pumps turned off so they can consume all the food you add to the tank. In addition you should start feeding them two or three times a day instead of one large feeding, that way more of the food you put into the tank will be consumed.

Increase the frequency that you clean your filters and replace filter media like activated carbon. Dirty filters will trap fish waste and uneaten fish food both of which will decay on the filter pad and release nitrates and phosphates both of which will increase the chances of an aquarium algae bloom.

Do more frequent water changes and make sure you are using purified water when you make saltwater for your tank. If you use tap water it could contain high amounts of nitrates and phosphates,both of which are the main food source for algae in a saltwater tank. Many local municipalities across the country put phosphates into their water system to keep the pipes from rusting so every time you do a water change you are adding fresh algae food into your tank.

You can also increase the water flow and surface water agitation in your tank to increase the oxygen levels in the water. Aquarium algae tends to grow well in tanks with low PH and oxygen levels and sometimes adding a small power head aimed at the water surface is enough to increase the oxygen enough.
