The right canister size for tank options?

Ok, so I bought a smaller tank which is not setup yet. I’m looking for a reasonable priced filter that can get a lot of the cleaning done. I was thinking of purchasing a canister filter, fluval or eheim. My tank is 12 gallons, and I would like to buy a 30 gallon tank in a year or more time. Since I will be housing an Oranda, they do not do well with too much current. I’ve been using a sponge filter for the quarantine, and that extra filter will go into the tank.

What type of canister capacity should I get that works well for 12 gallons and can also work for 30?

I’m inclined to go with Orion here on this one. A tank that size, you really don’t want or need a cannister. Typically though the make smaller sized one, it generates a strong back flow into the tank. You’re better off going with a clip on filter, and I highly reccomend the Aqua Clear lines. I’d get an Aqua Clear 50 for a 30 gallon tank, and an Aqua Clear 20 for a 12 gallon set up. Those will cycle through the tank capacity in excess of 4 times an hour, and not create such a strong flow your fish have to fight to swim, in addition to giving you the needed surface area for your beneficial bacteria to grow. If however you insist on using a Fluval, I’d get the very smallest model which I beileve is a Fluval 105.
