Substrate are essential to your live aquarium plants because it has some of the nutrients required for plant life. Regarding what type of substrate you put in your fish tanks it is recommended not to alter the water. The fish may become ill if the substrate is strong enough to change the water. An example of an incredibly strong substrate is lime because it creates too much alkaline which can be lethal to your fish.
