Before you get too caught up in the claims made about the effectiveness of reverse osmosis water purifiers, you should know that what manufacturers are telling you is not exactly true. Many companies recommend reverse osmosis filters as the answer to eliminating toxins into the water entering your home, but the fact is that there is much contamination that these appliances are not capable of blocking.

A reverse osmosis water purifier is a whole house water filter that is supposedly designed to remove the thousands of contaminants that have infiltrated our waterways. However, the truth is that the porous membrane filters which these systems use provide you with adequate demineralization, but this is not something that you need. The water treatment facility in your city or town has already de-mineralized your water.

The porous membrane reverse osmosis filters are technically the same ones that the water treatment facilities use to clean your water before they send it to you. If it were not for the ineffectiveness of this style of filter, then we would not have the need for a home water purification system in the first place. The only bright spots that these systems have is the chemical reducing pre-filter; this only does about half of what you need it to.

A reverse osmosis water purifier also runs on electricity, and you would be surprised at how much one of these appliances can increase your electric bill. The amount of water this type of system will waste is incredibly high also, with five gallons being wasted for each gallon cleaned. The truth is that there are more effective home water purifiers that require no electricity, and waste very little water.

These whole house appliances are typically less expensive, and have a longer lifespan than reverse osmosis filters. The filter life on these appliances is 3 years, while you cannot get a straight answer about the life of a membrane filter. You may find that a better choice for you is a point of use water purification system for your drinking water and your shower heads.

These smaller appliances actually remove far more contaminants than a reverse osmosis water purifier, or other whole house filter. These high quality units typically contain multiple filters which work to trap all of the contaminant categories that you face. This includes all chemical agents, biological contaminants, and toxic heavy metals that your water contains.

Reverse osmosis filters would be much more effective if they included a quartet of filters such as an activated granular carbon filter, a multi media block, an ion exchange, and a sub micron filter. These layered filters will keep your family completely safe from harm by removing up to 99% percent of the pollutants present in our water. An appliance featuring these filters is a worthwhile investment.

A reverse osmosis water purifier will not do the job that you need it to do, and so you need something that will. Look into purchasing a product that features the four of these filters, and clean water will never be a worry.
