what exactly does an aquatic diffuser stone do?

yea what the question says lol
isnt aerating your aquarium what the bubble wand is supposed to do?I dont see how a little stone is supposed to do
does the diffuser wear off eventually?

An air stone is basically one segment of a bubble wand. A bubble wand is a strip of porous material (wood or ceramic, generally), while an air stone is just a single chunk of that same material (again, wood or ceramic). Really, as long as you have a filter that agitates the surface (makes ripples), you don’t need an air stone or bubble wand. The bubbles themselves contribute very little to aeration, it is the action at the surface, where more water is forced into contact with air, that allows oxygen into the water.

EDIT: I have had ceramic diffusers wear down over time to the point that it basically just crumbles when you touch it. I think wood would hold up better, but can’t say that from experience. Pet stores sell replacements very cheaply, so if the diffuser errodes, it’s not much trouble to buy a new one.
