How long can i turn my fish pump of for ??

I have a fish tank in my lounge and the pump is rather loud , its fine when im not in there but when im trying to watch tv its very annoying , I have been told that if i turn it off for a long period of time nitrogen will build up and the fish will die , is this true ?? and how long is a long period of time?? , would it be ok to turn it off for say the 5 hours a evening i spend in my lounge ??

Yes that would be fine. I used to turn mine off at night sometimes and then turn it back on in the morning. Don’t forget to turn it back on though!
