Is a power compact flourescent fixture rated at 5000K 13 watts sufficient for a 12 gallon tank?

I bought a complete saltwater setup tank and the box said that it is coral ready. If this fixture enough for some soft corals? I am using a standard strip flourescent fixture now jut for the live rock and the stuff growing on the rocks are blooming nicely.

Most nano reef keepers I’ve talked to recommend 3 watts per gallon. It all depends on the type of corals you’re interested in keeping. Some of them have specific lighting needs and wouldn’t fair well under minimal lighting. No promises, but you might try mushroom coral, colt coral, or zooanthid coral. They can usually tolerate low lighting fairly well. However, everything will open up and look much better under stronger lighting.
