The average person has no idea what Japanese Trapdoor Snails are. But if you own a koi pond or another type of water garden, surely you have heard of one. They are a great help to a water gardener and koi pond owner.
Japanese Trapdoor Snails are great addition to your water garden or koi pond. They travel over your plants and the bottom of your pond to eat algae and all of the stuff that you do not want in your garden. They are like little black vacuum cleaners removing the sludge from your pond.
In order to have a real impact and to be the most effective, it is recommended that you have one snail for every three square feet of pond space.
Trapdoor snails will keep themselves busy on the bottom of your pond eating old, uneaten food and algae. If you have introduced enough of them to your pond, they can have a real and positive effect.
Not only to koi pond owners love the trapdoor snails for their ability to reduce algae, but they are a safe addition to your pond as they do not lay eggs and produce so many offspring that they take over your pond or water garden. In fact, they usually mate only a couple of times a year and deliver their babies. The fact that they do not lay eggs and produce a lot of baby snails is very appealing to the water garden owner.
If you notice that baby snails have been born and you want to be sure they live to aid in the maintenance of your pond, be sure to remove any that you see immediately after birth. You should raise these in an aquarium until they are more than one inch long. Koi fish will find newborn snails to be a great treat.
Japanese Trapdoor Snails are a wise investment for many water garden and koi pond owners.
