Planted Aquarium?
What’s the basic steps in a planted aquarium setup??
What’s the minium reuirement for a tankksize to keep it?
I’d like to try it one day, but can I setup a planted aquarium in a small tank around 10/15/20 gallons?
Thanks
Well, there are two different type of planted tanks, there is the low-tech and the high-tech. I know nothing about high-tech but I can help you a lot about the low-tech.
For a low-tech tank, you will use a very basic light, maybe with some sun-light, some low to medium light plants, small amounts of fish (since the plants are the main reason for this tank) and low filtration to no filtration.
Some very good low light plants are Water Wisteria, Water Sprite, Java Moss, Java Fern…. all of these grow super well even with little light.
For substrate you can just use some cheap gravel with added laterite or even just plain old potting soil.
For fish I usually use small tetras, cherry barbs or other small schooling fish. You want something that will still be adding a small amount of Co2 and waste to the tank but not enough to crash the tank.
Filtration, I use none in a planted tank but some will use a small powerhead to move the water around. Its your choice but a filter is not needed in a low-tech tank as long as you keep the fish population pretty low. Also, no bubblers since this will help remove the Co2 faster than your plants will be able to use it.
For light I just use plain old boring 15w lights (usually the plant bulbs). I try to make sure I have at least around 1.5w – 2w per gallon.
I hope this all helps. I have many planted tanks, my smallest being a 10g.
PS. these tanks have no added fertilizers, since that would start making it a high-tech tank.
