Can you transfer aquatic plant life from a stream or lake into a planted fish aquarium?
I have driftwood as well as gravel and rocks from our local streams and lakes that I have treated and are doing great in my planted aquarium but I wanted to move some local aquatic plant life from our lakes and streams into it as well but cant find if its okay for aquarium life. Is it okay? and if so what is the best way to treat and transfer plants? I should know this but dont and cant find anything about it.
You have to be careful as it can transmit diseases into your fish tank, with the driftwood you can leave it out in the sun to completely dry, this will kill any bacteria or parasites present but you can’t do this with the plants, you could give them a chemical bath but it wouldn’t be good for them. I guess if you could keep the plants alive in a hot temperature for a few days it should kill everything, I’d recommend over 30 degrees Celsius as after that most parasites have a hard time surviving and breeding. No matter what you do there’s always a risk, but then again every time you buy a new fish you are also putting any other fish in the aquarium at risk of disease so I guess it’s just luck of the draw. Before you take them make sure your legally allowed to take aquatic plant life as there can be massive fines in some parts of the world. I’d also try to get it from a source with clean running water if possible. Well anyways good luck hope all goes well for you. Oh and by the way after you dry the driftwood you will need to soak it again to get it to sink to the bottom of the tank, you can just use old tank water and a bucket for this. I know it all sounds a bit fussy but could save you fortunes in lost fish and medicine costs.
