Life Like
If intelligent life exists on other planets, would they have to be human and live in earth like conditions?

The reason I ask this, is because if our universe is constrained to laws, and the only evidence we have of intelligent life, is ourselves. Then wouldn’t it make sense that complex and intelligent life only be able to exist on another planet that has earth like conditions? Or does evolution throw that theory out the door, due to the unpredictability for life to evolve in any condition?

Well there’s one thing evolution does rule out, and that’s the odds of finding homo sapiens on another planet. Unless it came from Earth, or you are in a parallel universe, it simply is not going to happen. For that to happen, a planet would have had to have gone through the exact natural history of Earth which led to our evolution. If you consider the almost infinite number of parameters that led to humanity – and I’m talking about starting from single celled organisms 3.5 billion years ago – all the way to the present day, you can see that the possibility is just unpracticably remote.

As Carl Sagan said, we have more in common with a flower than any potential alien.

However, in terms of superficial resemblances, evolution on this planet has demonstrated that there are certain body shapes that appear to be best suited to solve a given problem. Two examples would be swimming through water, and flying. In the water, there have been several creatures that have independently evolved a very similar body shape to solve the problem of swimming – the fish, the ichthyosaurs and the dolphins. In the air, birds and bats have independently developed the power of flight, and there are many more gliding animals.

It’s not a stretch to view the upright posture of homo sapiens as being ideal for any creature that wants to use tools. I would not be surprised to find that other civilsations have been founded by bipedal, upright creatures such as ourselves.

In terms of conditions, there is actually a very narrow range of what we consider propitious for the development of complex life. We only have the Earth as a model, but it would appear that you do need stable, Earth-like conditions in order for advanced species like homo sapiens to evolve.
