I have a Renault Laguna S reg – it has very little power when in 1st & 2nd gear?

I drove it a few days ago and it was fine – this morning it had virtually now power in 1st & 2nd gear – is the clutch on its way out? It almost went backwards uphill. I have no idea about cars but assume I need to get it to a garage soonish. Any idea how much a clutch would cost for this car? Thanks!

Do you mean that it sounds like it’s revving its head off while you’re not getting anywhere fast? That is indeed a symptom of the clutch giving notice. Possibly accompanied by a nasty smell.

I’d hawk it around a few garages for a quote – if they agree it is the clutch that needs doing, get them to put in a complete clutch kit, including thrust bearing etc. The actual parts are quite cheap, it’s the labour that will cost and if you don’t have the whole job done now you’ll only be spending out again in the future.
