There are different types of automotive air filters according to the materials they are made from. Each type has a specific purpose and different people have different preferences. The different types of filters include paper, foam, cotton, and oil bath.

The term paper in paper air filters sometimes mislead people into thinking these filters are made of the usual soft paper we often see. On the contrary, paper filters are not made from the same materials as those papers used for writing. But while there are people who prefer paper air filters because they are efficient, easy to work with, and cheaper than other filters of different materials, there are also people who think that paper filters contribute to poor engine performance.

Foam air filters have been used in smaller engines but have been becoming a more popular choice for other people who especially encounter a lot of dust an dirt, as with the case of off-road rallies and motorsports. Depending on the thickness of the foam used, the filter can provide minimal air flow restriction and high capacity for trapping dirt and dust.

Cotton air filters like the ones primarily sold by Injen Technology are also a popular choice among people because it’s considered to be high-performance. Cotton filters or cotton gauzes as they are more commonly known are durable and easy to clean also, with a price that’s also within budget of most people.

The oil bath air-filter is made up of different materials used for the filter such as mesh, foam, and fiber. It’s also made up of a round base which has the oil, which traps the more heavier dust and dirt particles. Those lighter ones on the other hand are trapped in the cylindrical filter part. The oil bath filter is popular also with off-road vehicles because they trap more dirt and dust without compromising on the airflow of the engine.

Among these types of air filters, the most commonly used is the cotton gauze like the products of Injen Technology and other companies, mainly because it’s both high-performance and cost-effective.
