The white dwarf hamster (also known as the dwarf winter white Russian hamster) originally came from South West Siberia and East Kazakhstan. These hamsters have another name: Siberian hamster.

How To Recognize A White Dwarf Hamster

People can easily recognize these hamsters by the dorsal dark gray stripe, short tail and furry feet. These hamsters can change their color during the wintertime, which earned them the nickname winter white dwarf hamster. Since the daylight hours are shorter in the winter, the hamster’s coat turn lighter or white when there is snow. When the hamster has its winter coat, it will not breed.

How To Care For A White Dwarf Hamster

These hamsters generally live no more than two years. They are very personable and can live in harmony with their own kind. The best way for this to happen is to introduce your hamsters to each other while they are young. Despite being nocturnal, they can be active during the day as well, for short periods of time. It’s important that you choose wisely the kind of pet you get if you have small children. The white dwarf hamster may be tough for little children take care of and deal with.

Foods To Feed Your Pet Hamster

There are many foods you can feed your hamster including mouse and rat mix, lab blocks with sporadic bits of fruits and vegetables. You can also give your hamster Cheerios or wheat bread or perhaps crickets and mealworms in very minute quantities. Add vitamins to their diet like Nutri-Cal and make sure they get plenty of calcium. Make sure you never give your pet hamster chocolate, candy, fried foods, salted foods and any kind of junk food.

Make sure that the foods you give them are in stoneware or ceramic bowls. If you plan to feed them the lab blocks, utilize a wire mesh hopper.

These hamsters need lots of fresh water so be sure that the water you give them comes from a water bottle and not a bowl. Make sure the water is changed out once a week, maybe more. If you’re taking your hamster with you when you travel, be sure to remove the water container from the cage so that it doesn’t drip. To keep your pet hydrated, place in pieces of high in water fruits and vegetables in the cage while you are traveling.

It’s important that the white dwarf hamsters don’t become lonely because their demeanor is actually personable. They like to have company at any point in time so make sure they have another hamster in the cage. However, the cage should be equipped and big enough to hold two of them. If you want opposite sex hamsters, you need to know that these hamsters will breed quickly.

You can keep your white dwarf hamster in a cage big enough for a mouse, usually a 10-gallon tank will do. Be sure you give them a wooden house to play with and chew on. You should also add in a wheel, branches, rope swings, PVC pipe tunnels, toys that are entertaining. The bedding should be made of aspen, hay or paper. Do not use cedar or pine.

If you’re used to owning pets, a white dwarf hamster is great to own. After all, they don’t require any extra attention or care. All these hamsters need is a calm home that’s draft-free with lots of fresh food and water. Keep interesting chew toys on hand for them to use so they stay happy.
