DHA food sources can be broadly divided into two categories – plant sources and animal sources.

Flax seed oil is the primary one amongst the plant sources of this nutrient. Now, this oil doesn’t actually contain DHA directly. It contains another omega 3 fat – Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA).

Our body internally converts ALA into DHA and EPA. This process is not really efficient and only 5% to 25% ALA is finally converted into DHA and EPA. The rest of the fat is wasted. It’s much better to look towards the animal food sources then which can directly give us the DHA we need.

Meat from cows and lambs is rich in DHA fats. The only problem is – the meat industry has a practice of artificially fattening up the animals. This lowers the quantity and the quality of the omega 3 fats in their meat.

Eating fish like Salmon and Mackerel that are rich in omega 3, is another option you have. Again, most of these fish are bred and fed artificial pellets designed to fatten them up. This lowers the quality of omega 3 fats they contain.

The pollution levels of the ocean water also pose a threat to your health when you eat these fish. Heavy metals like mercury and lead are commonly found in fish meat and can cause health problems later.

One simple alternative to all these DHA food sources that can avoid all these problems is to take a good fish oil supplement.

A good supplement will source its oil from fish rich in omega 3 fats – like Salmon, Mackerel, Trout and Hoki (a New Zealand fish). The oil would then be purified and concentrated to a high degree.

This would take care of the contaminants present in the fish. The concentrated oil would contain large amounts of DHA and EPA, so that a just a couple of pills a day will give your body all the omega 3 it needs.
