As we have seen, water quality has the greatest single effect on fish health. Feeding koi is regarded as a highlight of the hobby, but adding food to a pond can have a detrimental effect on the water quality, jeopardizing koi health. Food should be offered sparingly; offer the fish only as much as they will eat in five minutes.

Uneaten food will become waterlogged and be broken down by bacteria in the pond, causing a rapid deterioration in water quality. Higher feeding rates, particularly in summer, can lead to a decline in water quality through an increase in fish excretion. Pond filtration and aeration must be geared to handle increased levels of fish waste.

It may be tempting to feed koi a range of treat foods, such as brown bread, sweet corn, peas, lettuce or even mussels and prawns. Take care when feeding these foods, as they do not represent a balanced diet in themselves and may be less digestible than you imagine. This may lead to the production of excessive waste or cause the water to cloud.

Many treats are very high in protein and if koi are fed excessive levels of protein, they will either use some of it as a source of energy or excrete the excess. Either way, the overall effect will be a rise in ammonia excreted, thus risking a rapid decline in water quality.

If the pond is suitably stocked, the system is adequately filtered and the koi are normally fed a balanced diet, then such problems should not arise if the koi are occasionally offered treat foods. Carry out regular partial water changes when koi are actively feeding to keep the water fresh and sweet.
