Once frozen food has defrosted why can you not freeze it again?

I have just come home to see that my freezer door wasn’t closed properly today and the food has half defrosted.

Am I ok to just close the freezer door and let the food freeze again? I mean surely if I cook the food thoroughly there will be no problem? I don’t know?

Why can you not refreeze food that you have already frozen and that has been defrosted? Anyone know?

The silly thing about ice cream is that when you are making it, you freeze the mix, then take it out of the freezer and give it a good beating, then put it back in the freezer.
If your food was only partly defrosted I would think it will be safe to eat – I often buy things when I’m shopping and by the time I get them back home to the freezer they are half-thawed and the same when I defrost my freezer – some things are getting quite soft before the machine is back up to temperature. No health problems – yet!
