How long before beneficial bacteria to build up on a foam filter?

I will be moving my fish into a bigger tank and i have placed the sponge filter and some decorations i intend to use in my current cycled tank to build up some beneficial bacteria to help cycle the new tank. How long before bacteria starts to build in the foam and decorations?

If you place the filter from the old tank onto the new tank your tank will near instantaneously cycle (since you’re transferring over the bulk of the beneficial bacteria). If you do this, move over the fish at the same time to keep the cycle going. Monitor ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels daily for about a week to ensure everything is going well.

Moving just the established sponge filter and some decorations from the established tank WITHOUT moving the fish over will result in a bacteria die off since there will be no ammonia source to sustain them. Doing this will be counter-productive.
