What are the most common misconceptions about fishkeeping?

Tell me what you think. I’m really interested in what people have heard about fish keeping?

Bettas like small spaces. >>>ROFL– simple response: NO.

Goldfish, or any other fish are fine in bowls. >>>Again, no.

You can cycle a tank by letting it run empty for a few days. >>>Biiiiig no.

Live plants will keep your fish healthy. >>> Not unless you’ve got considerably more plants than fish (in mass), as well as a good bit of lighting, CO2, and fertilizer to keep the plants growing very quickly.

You should be very worried about your pH. >>> Can’t get much farther from the truth.

If something goes wrong, clean the filter. >>> NO! Then you’ll have even more trouble when the ammonia spikes.

Fish will eat until there’s no more food. >>> No, at some point, all fish will give up and just swim away.

After reading the first post on this question, I felt the need to add this one: Doing water changes removes the nitrifying bacteria. >>> No, the bacteria you want adhere to surfaces, and hardly any can be found free floating.

There are cure-all medications. >>> Nope, just like with humans, there isn’t a silver bullet, especially when you consider that parasites, fungi, and bacteria are all fairly common in aquaria, and all require different treatments.

Fish are boring. >>> Fish are only as boring as you make them. If you decide to put them in a tank with only a couple decorations, they’ll be stressed, which you’ll find boring, but in an appropriately decorated tank (obviously this will vary from fish to fish), many are FAR more personable than any cat I’ve ever met.

There are fish that can keep the tank clean for you. >>> Anything that eats algae will put it right back into the water as poop, which is NOT clean, and will just lead to more algae.

Clear water is clean water. >>> Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are all colorless liquids that are highly toxic to fish. Many fish live in very murky water with low visibility, but it is far cleaner than most aquaria.
