Fish From

Build a Soap Bottle Fish with just a few items you can find around the house. This is a fun kids craft for kids, parents, teachers and educators to learn to build, and you can make it with very simple supplies. Just follow the instructions, and view the video and photo step-by-step instructions for more information.

Soap Bottle Fish

Always use your imagination and be creative when building this project or any others. It’s your creation, so be inventive when looking for building supplies – you just may be surprised! When building your project, experiment with new and different ways of putting it together. The most important thing is to have fun!

Find these or similar supplies!

* 1 plastic container

* Old box or some cardboard

* Tape for customizing

1. Cover your container!

I started out by covering my plastic container with tape. This is a good idea if you plan on dressing your fish up later.

2. Cut out your fins!

Next I cut out my fins, flippers and tail from an old box. You could play around with different designs, cutting them out and holding them up to your fish body before deciding on a design you like best. When you have a design you like, go ahead and tape it in place on the body of your fish like you see here.

3. Be creative with the fins!

I spent a lot of time on my fins, flippers and tail before I attached them to my fish body. After settling on a design, I carefully twisted pieces of tape into rope strands. I then taped each strand into place on the fins and tails, creating a ribbed-like design. As always, we hope you will experiment and try new techniques.

4. Tape up your fish!

I covered my entire fish body with a billion pieces of masking tape that I carefully ripped by hand into small scales, overlapping each one on top off the previous one. This created the incredible scale look you see here. Be warned… it took forever! (You don’t actually have to use a billion.)

5. Make the mouth!

For the mouth, I wadded up tape, shaping it into the basic mouth look that I liked. When ou use a lot of masking tape, you can mold it like clay, and you can form a mouth. Then I carefully taped it into place. This took a few layers to get the lips looking fairly smooth and realistic. Maybe you could try something else?

6.Make the eyes!

I taped 2 water bottle capes for eye bases. I wrapped tape, rolled up into long pieces, around the base of the eyes to create a sloped ridge, and I then taped over the eyes.

7. Color your fish!

Now it gets really fun. You can color your fish any way you like. Recently I was given some colored permanent markers. They are really cool,and they look great. I was able to mix the different colors together and with some trial and error, VOILA! – a crazy soap bottle fish! Don’t let him swim away…

8. Add the eyes!

Your fish will need some eyes. For my eyes, I cut two small cardboard circles out, covered them with tape, colored them, and attached them onto my eye bases. Then I cut out two more pieces (even smaller than before), colored them black, and attached them on top giving my fish some fish eyeballs.

Have fun with your soap bottle fish!

The one thing that probably discourages more people from purchasing and using cast iron is maintenance. Like carbon steel woks, cast iron cooking pieces require "seasoning." To many this is a mysterious or overly time-consuming process. Even if you treasure fond memories of eggs and pancakes cooked in grandmother's ancient, blackened skillet, you might have no idea how to turn your new pan into su...

There are thousands upon thousands of children's albums out there, but the one that quietly left its mark with more '70s children than perhaps any other album was this disc. Free to Be...You and Me was a pet project of proud feminist Marlo Thomas (a.k.a. "That Girl"), and it was born--according to the liner notes--by the desire to provide her niece with music "to celebrate who she was and who she ...

Rucker's transition has been highly praised, with The New York Times proclaiming he has "one of the year's most vibrant co...
In Rainbows In Rainbows
$7.58

On the deliriously satisfying In Rainbows, Radiohead returns to a more straight-ahead (though subdued) rock sound. Much hubbub has been made about this record's innovative release. Radiohead allowed fans to pay what they wished to download fairly low-resolution tracks from the band's own website. Like so many innovations, it already seems funny both that it was such big news and that someone else ...

$22.99

Walt Disney seems to have had a special affection for Lewis Carroll's "Alice" stories. "Alice's Wonderland" (1923), a short about a live-action little girl in a cartoon world, led to his first successful series, the "Alice" comedies (collected on Walt Disney Treasures: Disney Rarities--Celebrated Shorts, 1920s -1960s). During the early '30s, he talked about making an animation/live-action feature ...

Life is idyllic in the fairytale world where conflict is minimal and breaking into song solves every problem, but what happens when a princess from the fairy world gets magically transported into the real world? Pete's Dragon [VHS] Pete's Dragon [VHS]
$3.42

Disney loved to mix live action with animation (Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks), but this 1977 effort falls on its face. The turn-of-the-century story concerns an orphaned boy whose only friend is a cartoon monster. While the latter is entertainingly rendered, the rest of the film strains to be enchanting and the cast overreaches in a big way. Not for anybody over the age of ten. --Tom Keo...
