Filter (fish)?

WEll i bought my supplies for the fish tank and im cycling it i bought this water filter http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3610

when you enter the site the filter is there on the homepage with bio max and the others was wondering if that will help or if its good ??
hmm i cant really afford a underwater filter :/ could i get it later on and then still keep the filter i have now?
i already put biomax in there and put chemicals too so will the chemicals dissapear and not go into effect???

Filter look fine, assuming it’s the right size for your tank.

The biomax is optional. It is good because it provides more surface area for the cycle bacteria to live on. But running it with with just sponge media will work OK, especially if the tank isn’t overstocked. Carbon is optional too. You may wish to keep a carbon pack on hand incase you need to remove medications in the future, but it’s not usually important to run it all the time.

Sponge – essential, works as mechanical AND biolocigal filter. If you are only using sponges, rinse them instead of changing them.
Biomax – optional but good – extra biofiltering
Carbon – optional – chemical filtration.
Amonia pad – not needed unless you have cycle problems.

So go ahead and cycle using the sponge, it will work, you can get some biomax media later and just add it to the already cycled filter if you want.

Undergravel filters do work, but they are considered old school, and not as good as modern power filters. OK in small lightly stocked tanks or as a backup to a modern filter.
