What is the proper way to change the filter bag of an aquarium?

I worry that by replacing my old bag with a new filter I lose some of beneficial bacteria and harm my 30 gallon tank. What is the proper way to clean the filter and filter change pocket? Thank you!

If you have a bio wheel that most of the bacteria live at this point, but you're right that simply removing the "bag" is to eliminate the bacteria. A good way to avoid this is if the filter has an additional location for a second filter in place with the new filter for 1-2 weeks. This will allow bacteria to form the new filter before removing the old. If the filter is just dirt and not staying to clean up. This is not the best way, but it works. Turn off the filter and get a cube. Fill the bucket with water in the tank. Clean the filter in the bucket. This should save some of your bacteria.
