How do I operate a MAK 5 Magnetic Drive Pump for a marine aquarium?

I have a 120 gallon tank and it came with a sump and this MAK pump. I have no idea how to work one of these. There was no water in the sump yet. Could that be the problem? It also started smoking when I turned it on. Is it done for? There are no valves on this pump. I could really use some help or possibly an instruction manual. Please help!

I’m guessing that you have damaged it by running it dry. I’m searching for a manual, Is it a gen-x pcx100?
