I am upgrading a dosing pump from a 1/3HP motor to a 1/2 HP motor. Is there any changes I have to do?
Electrically wise?
I am going to assume that you aren’t using any fancy industrial motors and this is for a typical home. That being said, per NEC 430.148:
1/3HP@115V – 7.2A
1/2HP@115V – 9.8A
1/3HP@220V – 4.1A
1/2HP@220V – 5.6A
If you are using a dedicated circuit for the motor, it won’t matter. If you are using a circuit with other loads on it, remember the safe load is considered 80% of the breaker size. If you are switching out the motor in a table saw, compressor, or other motor that is not run on a regular basis, going up that small in HP shouldn’t make a big difference. If this will be on in more regular intervals, I would either do the calculations for the circuit myself or hire a trustworthy electrician who won’t try to upsell you something if it is not needed.
