Vacuum cleaner brush roll starts and then stops immediately?

My Eureka boss vaccum cleaner brush roll starts and then stops immediately. I opened it and checked, its because the motor connected to the brush roll does the same. I manually turned the motor head and it rotates freely, it is not tight. Any idea why the motor does this?. Is there a fix.? Please advise
