Exactly what is a check-valve and what does it do?

I have a water expansion tank attached/located above the hot water heater now. What should the cost be to place the check-valve between the water heater and the 4.5 gallon water expansion tank. A prior contributor stated to “be sure the check valve goes before the expansion tank. I’m concerned with the COST of, I guess removing the expansion tank, placing the check-valve and than replacing the expansion tank again. mOSTLY LABOR? wHAT SHOULD CHECK VALVE COST? As always, I thank you all for your replies.

The check valve should go before the expansion tank. I’m assuming you are having a problem with hot water backflowing into the cold? A check valve would be mostly labor, a spring check valve can be installed either horizontally or vertically. A swing check can only be installed horizontally. Both are less than $10 for 3/4″. I would guess to have it done would cost between $100 – $200. 15 minutes I would estimate for time to install, with no glitches. Which I wouldn’t foresee happening.
