The carbon filter?

How can you use a carbon filter down? I have a 5 gallon tank with a filter that comes with it. Do you just left the filter and put new ones? I heard that you keep the white cloth mesh, simply open the mesh and replaced by fresh carbon from another filter sleeves. I'm so confused. My tank is not cycled yet I've only had for 2 months

Every 6-8 weeks, you remove a part of it and replace it with the new. The media is where the bacteria live, if throwing your media also throw in the bacterium that has spent the last 2 months trying to colonize. I have never used this filter before, but if you go to the store where you bought it and ask them to show I'm sure you'll be happy.
