The filter cartridge has been in use for decades. Freshwater aquariums were the first to use them and still do. Then came the marine aquarium and filter cartridge has been used to support those. Canister filters have been around so long that now they are very reliable and failures are rare.
Filtering techniques aquarium has grown considerably over the last decade or two. Aquarists strive to make your reef aquarium depends on the natural filtration whenever possible. The use of 'live' rock is a prime example. This rock can withstand the reef aquarium perfectly, whenever sufficient quality and sufficient quantity, and capabilities are not abused by the fans. Live Rock is probably the main method of filter in use today in the reef aquarium anyway. Another example is the filtration DSB (deep sand bed) that natural methods provide support.
So the filter cartridge? With all these modern techniques, has been such Once the need for a filter cartridge. Well, it does not.
A filter cartridge can be used to house the filter pads coal or wool to help to keep water clean pollution free land and sea. Some aquarists have pieces (about ½ to 1 inch squares?) Of living stones in the cartridge and the report that life in the cartridge is quite amazing – worms, small shrimp tube, etc.
However, the filter cartridge has been completed to the extent of a biological support function mean? No, this is not the answer is (in my opinion). This is not the method recommended by the number one biological filtration Navy today, and with reason. There are times when the proper use of a filter cartridge is, what can we say – comfortable.
Live Rock is extremely expensive and not is necessary to decide whether filtered with a sufficient amount is not obtained. There are other decorative stones and seafarers not appropriate filtration capability, but are available to a much lower price. Thus, the aquarium, which is cost prohibitive Rock Live is still able to consider a marine aquarium. Decorate with rock gardens, low cost and with a cartridge filter filter. No need for a sump, another cut costs.
I can almost feel the hackles rising in some marine aquarium! But look more.
The Aquarium of low budget, if budget permits, obtain two cartridge filters, although this is not absolutely necessary – Filter cartridges are reliable as directed. It acts as a backup system to another. Interior compartments must contain coarse and fine filter (gross before cutting). After the filter material, and the last line should come from biological media. It's easy and not too expensive. Media frit glass is good, but there are others.
The filter cartridge is cleaned at least every four weeks, or as experience required. The material coarse / fine filter should be kept free flowing and biological environments protected against dirt. With two cans, this can be achieved by cleaning one or two weeks, every four weeks, the first six weeks, the media is not cleaned biologically, only coarse filtration materials and fine. Needless to say, the filter cartridge must be able to correct the size of the aquarium, they are supporting.
Ah, I hear the question coming up! But the cartridge filters are nitrate factories that are not? Nitrate is a higher thing, the marine aquarium does not need.
To some extent this is correct. A filter cartridge is a nitrate factory. However, nitrate production is not unique to the cartridges, is caused by any biological filtration system. Another filtration system will produce the same amount of nitrates, such as the container with the same amount of ammonia to start. It is the nitrogen cycle, the substances toxic natural ventilation. There is a difference though. The filter cartridge should be pumped through the water oxygenated, which means that only the nitrogen cycle can progress to the extent of nitrate production. Rock Live, for example, we hope to complete the total nitrogen cycle, nitrates Late gas is released the aquarium. Changes in sea-water routine is recommended for all aquariums. When a cartridge filter you use (ecological) change of seawater must be completed because it is one of the methods to reduce nitrates. The aquarium using a cartridge may consider completing the nitrogen cycle by other means. A deleted denitrator nitrate effectively, so that is an option. Denitrators sulfur is the best option (in my opinion).
Now, things became more complicated still. If denitrators then it must be considered, along with the cost of non-live rock decor and the filter cartridge (s), and organic media, the cost of is increasing. The choice of a filter cartridge does not seem reasonable when you get an aquarium rather small (eg, changes in seawater are easier to administer and less expensive). Large aquariums with live rock seem better, even if the overall cost is high.
This is not a recommendation for cartridge filters in the other filtration methods. It is my opinion that the rock, along with a DSB in a sump, a very good option is filtration. However, for an aquarium rather small, where water changes are no problem and bio-burden is particularly heavy, the filter cartridge is a viable option for biological support. The aquarium should, of course, the cost of the options carefully, and use of live rock, if possible.
