What are florescent bulbs?

Florescent bulbs are glass tubes filled with gas. The gases in the tube heat up via electricity to create the light that illuminates your aquarium. As the light passes through the Phosphor coating on the inside of the tube, the various mixtures of phosphors produce a colour based on its specific chemicals. These types of bulbs are ideal for fish only aquariums, which is a common setup and are also good for some live plants.

We recommend you change these bulbs roughly every 8-12 months which is a fair lifespan if you want to maintain a strong output and colour for the benefit of your fish. You must change these somewhere along the line as the phosphors can wear over time decreasing the lighting.

Another huge plus point about florescent bulbs is that not only are the long lasting, nice to look at and good for your fish but they are also inexpensive.
