How do I clean my aquarium filter sponge, without dirt disperse in water?

When I take my sponge filter (a vacuum) above the bottom of the tank outside the aquarium all the dirt and spills in the vase water. Not much to wash the sponge and the land is still floating in the water. I tried to capture the foam with a paper towel or plastic bag in hand to prevent dirt floating around, but seems to work.

You do not need to change / clean the sponge unless you look up and press your fingers and not recover. If it bounces back, do nothing with it. The sponge is the main host beneficial bacteria for the tank. If you change it, you will most likely send your car through a mini-cycle that will focus on recovering. If you press and no rebound, try taking it and rinse in a bucket of water treated with decholorinator. When rinsing with water, If you do not bounce, then you should replace it completely. You should not have to do more than once every six months (or more).
