Aquarium salt?
I have a 55 gallon aquarium freshwater pool. I hear it's beneficial to add a small amount of table salt in the tank. Is there any truth to that?
The salt has advantages in the aquarium and I use with my fish. As you may have guessed from the answers to your question, there are many discussions on this subject, even among people who keep fish. Salt can mitigate the effects of nitrite levels in water in the fish during the cycling process. This is because (salt, specifically chloride) reduces the amount of nitrite that takes the place of oxygen in the blood of the fish (you ever wondered why they are off the air unless you change the water too soon?). Providers use a fairly high concentration of salt in the shipment of fish for your pet – especially if coming from abroad – All these fish together in a small bag of hours to produce waste much time, sometimes to the point where the water is so cloudy, it is difficult to see the same fish. The use of salt during the expedition somewhere in the range of survival rates of 90% increase in transit without it. The most commonly cited reasons for use are relief stress and prevention of disease, but stress relief is probably related to the absorption of nitrite reduced as explained above. salt "bath" is a traditional remedy to eliminate parasites and other pathogens, since they do not tolerate salt and fish can not in excess. Concentrations higher can also stimulate fish to produce excess mucus to prevent certain parasites / pathogens to attach to fish (At this concentration, salt can be stressful for the fish too). Supporters, farmers and veterinarians have recommended that small amounts (about 1% concentration or less) in the aquarium as a safe level for the prevention of diseases and parasites. This works for something called osmotic pressure / osmotic balance – an elegant way salt and other ions (electrolytes) in the cells of a fish compared to the amount from the outside. Salt can be easily removed from gills of fish. Why Why, then, a high concentration inside and outside their consistanly bodies of freshwater fish? Freshwater fishes are specialized cells to help ion collection saltwater. Indeed, maintaining this balance of salt represents about 25-50% of the energy consumed by a fish. Basically, a fish is better suited for the adoption and use of salt that are diseases and parasites that infect them. Like a fish use salt? Chloride ions, in addition to its use for inhibit the absorption of nitrites are used in the production of hydrochloric acid – used for food digestion. Sodium ions is used for metabolism cells in a unique way – called "active transport". All materials may move freely within the cells of an animal. Some require "help", and sodium ions are part of the aid, especially in the movement of potassium, which is used in fluid / electrolyte balance, contraction muscle, and conduction of nerve impulses. Such transport also occurs in humans, too. Some fish are more sensitive to salt than others and some are more efficient in the purchase as well. This should be taken into account in deciding whether to add or how much should be added. Although not absolutely necessary to add a tank (and many who have not followed the fish with success), I found that using small amounts that I had fewer problems with disease and mortality that before you start using it. I'll give you some links below the sources and further reading for those interested.
