Aquarium Driftwood?

What are the ups and downs of floating aquarium? I recently bought one and was soaked for about a week or two. I really dont know what is good for, besides being decorative. So I want to know what they can do for / to tank, please give me some positive experiences and Witnesses have been negative. Oh, and Driftwood is particularly damaging to all types of fish? I know how tannins and can discolor the tank, so im soaking it. and I Plati, small fish, a kissing gourami and grouse.
