How can I better manage my small animal cage smellof?

We have a mouse, a rescued pet foods is snake. It is in a 10 gallon tank in my son's room. We really enjoy seeing, but unfortunately is very offensive. I tried to control odor products specially constructed for this purpose, but in vain. I changed the tank completely every week. Then I perfumed cat litter the bottom of the cage? Would hurt? Or what about the type of clay, unscented? Or baking soda? Has anyone tried the things you put in water to help control internally? Is it safe? Please help! And no, I do not consider the food of snakes!
